A LITTLE BREATH OF SCOTLAND PRESS RELEASE

“A LITTLE BREATH OF SCOTLAND”

We are sorry to advise you that after fifty years on the radio, Toronto’s longest running radio show with the same host, “ A Little Breath of Scotland ” will be going off the air.

Radio host, Denis Snowdon met with AM740 station manager Dan Hamilton and music director Neil Hedley after Sunday’s show, and was told that the show would be reduced to one hour per week from its traditional two hour time slot and that only half the shows would be broadcast live. He was told that the other half of his shows would be broadcast as “the best of” shows, taken from previously archived shows, which would contain no local news or information. Mr. Snowdon was not consulted about the proposed changes.

Mr. Snowdon feels that the position of Am740 is completely unacceptable, and undermines the integrity of a show that has served a loyal listening audience since 1965. He accordingly has told the station that the August 9th show was his last on AM740.

They say that all good things must come to an end and Mr. Snowdon would like to thank all of his listeners and advertisers for their loyalty and support over the past 50 years.

If you feel you would like to let the station know your feelings on their decision, they may be contacted as follows:

Mr. Moses Znaimer

Phone : 416-367-5353

Please feel free to pass on this release to any interested parties.

Happy New Year !

I hope you had a great Christmas, and are looking forward to 2013.

2012 was an eventful year for the Snowdon clan. In August we welcomed two new lovely grandsons into the world within three days, Xavier Hugh Snowdon and Wallace Anton Bajor. The grandchildren count is now four boys and two girls. Our other piece of family news happened at the end of the year when our baby, Andrea, got engaged to Rob Acton, so we are looking forward to a wedding this year.

The show continues to roll along, and at the end of March the station will be moving from it’s current location at Queen and River in the east end of Toronto to the new Zoomermedia complex on Jefferson Ave in the Liberty Village district. The new location will house the Radio, Vision TV,Zoomer magazine and CARP divisions in the same building. From my point of view, it should mean less commute time from Oakville on a Sunday !

On the travel front, we’re off on our 29th annual Caribbean cruise on the 25th, so looking forward to a couple of weeks in the sun with a great bunch of friends.

Our June British Isles cruise has attracted a lot of attention, and we have a number of folks who have never been with us before signed up for the cruise. The destinations are great, and one of the added bonuses is that we will be in Normandy on D-Day, June 6th. There is still some space left on this cruise, and if you are interested, or know of someone else looking to cruise this summer, you can get more information by calling Nora Pearce at Vision 2000 cruises in Ancaster, toll free at 1-866- 648-4483. You can also get the cruise details on our web site, denissnowdon.com, and look under the cruise link.

Once again, just a reminder that the show can be heard anywhere, anytime using the podcast feature, and one of the great benefits is that the podcasts are commercial free !

Thank you again for your loyal support, and continuing to spread the word about A Little Breath of Scotland.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and yours a healthy, happy 2013.

Summer 2012 Newsletter

I do hope you have had a great summer. Now that September is upon us, I thought it was time to say hullo, and give you a brief update on how things are in the Snowdon household.

As always, our winter cruise was just great, and it was nice sailing once again with Holland America. Our cabin allocation for the January 2013 cruise is all used up. Those who have signed up have realized substantial savings, as the cruises lines prices on that sailing have really jumped up.

In the middle of April Denise and I sailed from Ft. Lauderdale to Rome, and then spent a few days in Milan, visiting Como, and also Lugano in Switzerland. It brought back a lot of memories for me, as I had not been there since I went on a school trip from Scotland in the middle of the last century !!!!!

Fergus was a bit of a rainy affair, but we did manage to complete the tattoo in spite of the weather.

August was a rather special month for Denise and I, as we saw the birth of two new grandsons within the space of three days. Xavier Hugh Snowdon arrived on August 9th, and on August 12th Wallace Anton Bajor arrived. We joke that it was like having twins born into the family, except they don’t live in the same house! Fortunately, they do live fairly close to each other, but yours truly is doing a lot of driving these days! That brings the grand total to six grandchildren, four boys and two girls.

I still get lots of calls from folks asking me about doing a tour of Scotland. Well next year we are doing a 12 night British Isles cruise on the Caribbean Princess. We will be visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Orkney in Scotland. In Ireland our ports of call are Belfast, Dublin and Cork, finishing up with a stop in Guernsey in the Channel islands.

An added bonus is the fact that our first port of call will be Le Havre, in France on June 6th, 2013, the 69th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Passengers can then have the opportunity to visit the Juno Beach Museum, which is of special interest to Canadians. You can see all the details of the cruise on our web site, www.denissnowdon.com, and looking under the cruise link.

The show continues to roll along, and I do thank all of you for your continued support. Again, you can always catch up on previous shows by having a listen via the podcast link.

Enjoy the rest of the nice weather, and stay healthy.

CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER

It’s the beginning of December, and I really don’t know where the year has gone !

Denise and I have had a great year, and we made our annual pilgrimage to Scotland in May, crossing on the Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southhampton and flying home from Glasgow. Over the years I have been trying to visit islands that we were not able to include on our Scottish tours. This year, Tiree was the choice, and to reach it we took a 4 ½ hour sail from Oban. The big attraction for visitors are the wonderful beaches, and the winds, which attract surfers from all over the U.K. and beyond. Denise and I can attest to the fact that it is windy in Tiree, and trees are few and far between !! However, we did enjoy our stay there, and glad we visited.

In the fall we were joined by a great group of friends as we journeyed from Amsterdam to Vienna on a river cruise. This was a new experience for all of us, and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting new towns every day, and no-one felt the motion of the ocean !

October of course saw the show celebrate it’s 46th birthday, a little more subdued that our 45th birthday. It still amazes me, and a lot of other folks too, that the show has been on the air for so long. It just seems like yesterday when it all began.

The podcasts have really taken off, and it’s a great way of catching up on previous shows that you may have missed, or just wanted to give a listen to again. There is no excuse now to miss a show !!!

In case you need reminding, you can find the podcast at www.am740.ca and follow the links. Perhaps you know of someone who might enjoy the show, please pass on the link to them. This is especially good for those who do not live in our time zone, or country.

May I take this opportunity once again to thank you for your loyalty and support over the years.

Denise and I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

2011 NEWSLETTER

Newsletter, Show Notes, Web Site News Comments Off on 2011 NEWSLETTER

I wasn’t sure whether to call this a winter newsletter, or an early spring one !!!!!

I hope you all have survived the winter, and are looking forward to those spring days.

First of all, may I thank those who took the time to let me know how much you enjoyed our 45th anniversary show. It really was difficult to try and fit in all the music we wanted to play, but I think it worked out well.

The really good news I want to share with you is that at long last, you don’t have an excuse to ever miss another edition of A Little Breath of Scotland !!

Our show is now available as a podcast every week, which means that as long as you have a computer, you can listen to the show at your leisure any time during the week. You simply log on to www.am740.ca, look for the podcast link for the show, and enjoy the music. You can even fast forward and skip the boring parts if you want to!!

This link will take you directly there [click here] or you can cut and paste the address directly into your browser. The address is: http://zoomerradio.ca/a-little-breath-of-scotland/

This feature is especially welcome to listeners in different time zones and countries, who can now enjoy the show when they want to, and don’t have to stay up late, or get up in the middle of the night to catch us live on a Sunday.

If I could ask your help in spreading the word about this new feature, which many have been asking for, it would be greatly appreciated. If you could sent an e-mail to all those in your address book who might be interested in listening to the show, that would be great. If you are on facebook or twitter, any mention about the podcast would be a help too.

Once again, thank you so much for all your support over the years, and hopefully this new feature will allow even more listeners to enjoy the music we love so much.

FALL 2010 NEWSLETTER

Newsletter, Tours Comments Off on FALL 2010 NEWSLETTER

What a summer !! No complaints about the weather this year, until you have a look at your hydro bill !

The busy fall season is upon us, and we are getting ready for our 45th birthday show on October 24th. The anniversary actually falls right on the day, as our first half hour show on CHWO was on Sunday evening, October 24th, 1965. The following week, the show was extended to an hour, and the rest, as they say, is history. I have so many memories that it is difficult recalling them all, so putting together the music for this programme will be challenging. Our show on October 17th will be an appetizer for the birthday show, as there is no way I can cram all the music I would like to play into two hours.

The most important part in the success of the show is the loyalty of the listener. Several generations have helped it grow in popularity, and with word of mouth being the best form of publicity, we’ve built up a listenership that is the envy of many in the broadcasting industry. They just find it hard to believe that a show like “A little Breath of Scotland” can consistently outdraw the competition in the Sunday afternoon time slot. The other interesting factor over the years is that the show has a wide appeal, not just to folks who are Scottish, or have a Scottish heritage. I am a firm believer that music is a universal language, and if the piece of music has a story to tell,or is pleasant to the ear, then no matter your background, you can enjoy the show.

So may I ask to mark October 24th on the calendar, and join me as we celebrate the 45th birthday of the show. Remember too that you can let your internet friends know that they can listen to the show at www.zoomerradio.ca

On another topic, the tour operator handling our Rhine/Danube river cruise next September had extended the early booking discount of $500/per person, but the deadline for making the deposit is October 9th. If you would like to join Denise and I on this fabulous cruise, you can get the details from Michelle Campbell, Vision 2000 travel group, at 1-866-648-4483. You can also find the detailed itinerary on our web site, www.denissnowdon.com, and look under the cruise link.

Enjoy fall, and stay healthy.

SPRING NEWSLETTER UPDATE

Spring 2010

As I mentioned in our spring newsletter, we were working out the details of a European river cruise for September, 2011.

I am happy to let you know that at last, all the arrangements have been finalized. You can get all the information on our web site, www.denissnowdon.com, by looking under the cruise link.

River cruises traditionally sell out very quickly, so early booking is important especially if you wish to take advantage of the huge early booking discount.

Denise and I are off to Scotland on Wednesday, and are looking forward to a side trip to the Shetlands. On my many tours, that was one place I never did get to visit. Like the river cruise, better late than never !

If you are at Fergus in August, hope to see you at the tattoo on the 13th.

Enjoy summer.

SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER

Newsletter Comments Off on SPRING 2010 NEWSLETTER

I can hardly believe a year has gone by since we last sent out a newsletter. I’m not sure if it’s because there is no news, or that time just flies, and as the old song says,” Another year passes”!

This October we will be celebrating the 45th birthday of the show. It really is amazing that it all started away back in 1965! I have so many great memories, met interesting people, and had the best, most loyal audience a host could ever wish for.

The show continues to be one of the most listened to shows on AM740, and on Sundays, one of the top ranked shows in all of Ontario in it’s time slot. Remember too, as you have a computer, that you can listen to the show at www.zoomerradio.ca, and it comes through crystal clear, and in stereo, an added bonus. This is especially helpful if you happen to live in or near a hi rise building, which sometimes interferes with our signal.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Kenneth McKellar earlier this month, but the great thing is, of course, that we will still be able to enjoy all the wonderful recorded music he left for us.

On a personal note, Denise and I now have a fourth grandchild ! Malaiki Anne-Marie Snowdon is the latest addition to the clan. Our son Paul and his wife Penny now have a little girl to join Gabriel, who is now two and a half. Malaiki, by the way is Swahili for “angel”!

We had a wonderful Panama Canal cruise in February with our usual wonderful group of friends. You can see some of the photographs in the photo section of the website www.denissnowdon.com

At the time of writing, we only have space for three couple on our 2011 winter cruise. Again, the itinerary is posted on the web site, so if you are interested in coming with us, don’t delay.

Still on the cruise front, as a result of many requests, we will be doing a Rhine/Danube river cruise next September. Details are being finalized at the moment, and will be available very shortly. These cruises are so popular that they sell out very quickly, so advance booking is paramount.

Once again, may I take this opportunity to thank you for listening to the show, spreading the good word, and making my weekly drive from Oakville to Toronto every Sunday so worthwhile!

Have a wonderful summer, and stay healthy.

Denis

I hope you survived the winter, and are looking forward to spring and summer.

The show continues to do very well in the ratings, and it is gratifying that we have a large number of listeners who join us each week via the internet. Remember, if you are close by a computer, you can always catch the show at www.am740.ca

Denise and I attended several Burns’ suppers in January, and in Kitchener Denise addressed the haggis. Needless to say, this was a big hit, especially with the ladies present, and all the experts tell me she always does a much better job than me !!!!

We had a great Caribbean cruise in February, and if you look at the video link on our web site, www.denissnowdon.com, you can have a look at some of my photographs. In case you are wondering, a few of the shots show some of our group trying to figure out the correct answers to our famous quiz !

Our next cruise in July, is to Scandinavia and Russia. The bookings on that cruise are now closed.

I can tell you that our 26th annual winter cruise is now set to go, and on February 5th we head to Los Angeles. We will be joining the Coral Princess for a 15 night cruise, the highlight of which is a daylight transit of the Panama Canal. This will be the first time we have done the complete transit, so we are very excited about this cruise. Many of our past passengers are already signed up for the cruise, and we are more than 50% sold out. If you are thinking about joining us for this memorable cruise, I would suggest booking as soon as possible. You can get a copy of the complete itinerary at www.denissnowdon.com, and click on the cruise link.

August 7th will again see me at Fergus for the Friday night tattoo, perhaps I’ll see you there.

I hope you are all keeping well, and as always, thank you so much for your continued support of A Little Breath of Scotland.

Enjoy your spring and summer.

Where does the time go!

I hope you had a good summer, even although we saw a lot more rain than most of us would have wished for. Perhaps it was more of a Scottish summer, than a Canadian one!

We have made the transition to our new studios on Queen St E. in Toronto, and as I mentioned in the April newsletter, there have been quite a few changes, but the Sunday schedule is basically unchanged. The only downside for me is that I now have a 100 km roundtrip commute each week, and so Sunday dinner can be a late affair, depending on the traffic.

We will be starting the 44th year of the programme with the October 19th edition of the show. Without the support and loyalty of the audience this milestone would never have been achieved. We continue to increase our worldwide audience thanks to the internet, and as the word spreads, this is another measure of the show’s success. If you have friends and family who would enjoy the show, just let them know that they can listen along with you at www.AM740.ca

Travel-wise, our winter 2009 cruise sold out in a matter of a few weeks. In the summer, Denise and I will be leading a group on a 14 night cruise to Scandinavia and Russia leaving on July 9th, 2009. We would love to have you come along with us. You can get more information by calling Michelle Campbell, at Vision 2000 Travel and Cruises in Ancaster, toll free, 1-866-648-4483. If you look under the cruise link of our web site, www.denissnowdon.com, you will find a copy of the flyer, giving all the details.

I hope you survived winter, it certainly was a long one.

You may have heard that AM740 will have new owners as of April 30th., MZ Communications, owned by Mr.Moses Znaimer. Mr.Znaimer is a well known figure in Canadian broadcasting circles, having started City TV, Much Music and Bravo among other ventures. AM740 now joins Toronto’s classical 96.3 in the MZ family. While I am sure there will be changes made, I am happy to tell you that “ A Little Breath of Scotland” will continue to be on air each Sunday from 4-6p.m.

The spring ratings have just been released, and we continue to have outstanding ratings in the Sunday 4-6p.m. time slot. Thank you all for spreading the good word about the show!

With the opportunity to listen to the show on the internet, we have listeners all over the world, and if you know someone who may be interested in the show, and are out of our coverage area, they can listen to the show on the net at www.am740.ca. Send an e-mail to a friend and let them know, I’m sure they will thank you !! If you live in a hi-rise building and also experience problems, again the net is the best way to tune in.

We had a great group of old and new friends join Denise and I on our cruise to Hawaii in February. Our plans for next winter have just been completed, and you can get all the information if you look under the 2009 cruise link on the front page of the web site. I can tell you that more than 50% of our allocation has already been taken up by folks who were on the Hawaii cruise. Our photo album has been updated, so have a look at the Hawaii pictures. As you can tell, we always have a great time. If you haven’t signed up yet and are planning to come along, my advice is to contact JoAnne Patterson at Vision 2000 Travel and Cruises in Ancaster as soon as possible. Her toll free number is 1-866-648-4483.

If you make your deposit between April 17th and 23rd you can take advantage of a reduced deposit of only $275 per person.

Denise and I would love you to come with us on our 25th annual winter cruise, it’s a great way to escape at least some of old man winter.

Enjoy Spring and Summer, and thanks again for being a loyal listener to AM740 and A Little Breath of Scotland.

I hope you had a great summer. We certainly couldn’t complain about the weather.

It is hard to believe that it’s been six months since our last newsletter.

Denise and I were in Scotland a few weeks back, and were able to visit Barra, Eriskay, North and South Uist and Benbecula for the first time. The weather was great too!!

The show continues to gather new listeners all the time, and of course we have just begun our 43rd year on CHWO. The ratings are again very strong, as we continue to be in top spot for our time slot on a Sunday afternoon.

This year November 11th falls on a Sunday, so our Remembrance show has even more significance. Each year, we receive more comments about that show than any other. It is the one programme when I’d like to be a listener, as of course the show is live, so I don’t get the chance to sit back and enjoy!

Our listeners really are a world wide family now, as we continue to have more listen on the internet each week. If you have family or friends who might enjoy the show, and they have a computer, they can listen on Sundays, just like you, at www.am740.ca

Our January 31st cruise to Hawaii has been sold out for quite some time, and now have a wait list. It pays to book early !!!

On a personal note, there is a new addition to the Snowdon clan, as our son Paul and his wife Penny saw the arrival of their first child, Gabriel Joseph, on September 13. Paul was the last male of the Snowdons, so now the lineage continues!

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and once again, thanks so much for listening to the show.

Sincerely,
Denis

The 2007 spring ratings have just been released, and needless to say, I am extremely happy to let you know that in the 35+ age group, “ A Little Breath of Scotland” is the # 1 show in it’s time slot on a Sunday afternoon. My thanks to all of you who are supporters of the programme.

We had an extremely successful February cruise to the Caribbean, and everyone just loved the fact that it was a fourteen night cruise, and we also missed a huge snow storm !

We have no other group tour plans for this year, but we are in the final stages of completing the arrangements for next February’s cruise, and I can tell you that while the gentlemen always look terrific in the kilt, I am just dying to see the ladies wearing their grass skirts ! Three guesses where we will be off to, and I’m sure you will get it right first time !! We will send out the detailed information when
all has been finalized.

The balconies are all gone, but if you hurry, you still have time to book an ocean view or an inside stateroom, as Denise and I would love to have you join us on our 23rd annual winter cruise on board Holland America’s Veendam, leaving on February 3rd, 2007.

Please call Joyce at Vision 2000 Ancaster, toll free, 1-866-648-4483 to make a reservation.

You can get more details about the itinerary at our web site, www.denissnowdon.com

Dear friend,

At long last, you can find the information on next February’s cruise on my
website at ..

http://www.denissnowdon.com/tours/Feb07Cruise.pdf

I had a long, hard look at various alternatives, and as this is our 23rd
annual winter Caribbean cruise, it’s a challenge to find something a little
different.

I hope you like our choice, as we will be sailing on Holland America’s
Veendam out of Tampa. We will be returning to a smaller ship, and I
know that appeals to many. The 14 night cruise is new for us, and those
extra days away from the cold of winter will be a bonus for a lot of us.

As always, we will spend one night in Florida ahead of the cruise, and I
think you will enjoy the Clearwater Beach/St.Petes beachfront hotel that
we have chosen for your overnight stay.

Because of the size of the ship, there are not as many balcony cabins
available, but we have obtained a number in our allocation. However,
Holland America reserves the right to recall these cabins at any time, so
early booking of those cabins is especially highly recommended.

Denise and I hope you will be able to join us on the cruise, as so many
have done in the past. We will have the usual get-togethers on board
that help to make our cruises just that little bit special.

Joyce Laking at Vision 2000 Ancaster is again looking after the
reservations, and you can call her toll free at 1-866-648-4483. Should
Joyce not be available, Joanne Patterson will be happy to assist.

Have a wonderful summer, and Denise and I look forward to seeing you
next February, if not before !

Yours Aye,

Denis Snowdon
